Whiskers, eyes and coat patterns tell the story

A cat’s face can look very different when a small marking changes. Check the lines beside the eyes of a tabby, the distribution of patches on a tortoiseshell, or the boundary between a dark mask and pale muzzle. A symmetrical-looking portrait is not automatically a more accurate one. Keep an asymmetrical marking if it belongs to your cat, and compare the preview with the actual photograph rather than a general picture of the breed.

Leave enough room for whiskers and the tips of the ears. A photograph taken too close to the nose can exaggerate the face, while a distant image may hide eye colour and fine coat detail. For a black cat, choose lighting that shows the outline of the eyes and muzzle. For a white cat, avoid a bright background that makes the ears disappear. Long-haired cats may need a little extra space around the cheeks so their silhouette remains recognisable in the finished picture.

A kitten, an adult or a much-loved older cat

Let the selected photograph decide the chapter

The rounder face of a kitten, the alert expression of an adult and the settled look of an older cat can each represent a different memory. Choose the age you want to see in this portrait. You do not have to replace a recent photograph with a younger one. The posture and expression may be more important than a perfect coat, especially if you remember a familiar head tilt or the way your cat looked at you from a favourite chair.

Many cat photographs are taken while the animal is sleeping or looking away. Those pictures can be meaningful, but choose one with enough visible facial information for the portrait you want. An image of a curled sleeping cat tells a different story from a face looking toward the camera. If you only have an older, small photograph, review the available detail honestly and keep the proposed print size in mind rather than assuming that resizing will recover missing whiskers.

Remember the quiet habits around the house

A display can be small and personal

A cat’s routines often belong to particular places: a sunny patch on the floor, the back of a sofa, a windowsill at a certain time of day. Consider a portrait near a place that holds a happy memory, while keeping the artwork out of direct sunlight. You might pair it with an ordinary photograph of that space or display the portrait on its own. There is no need to turn the room into a permanent memorial area if a small picture feels more comfortable.

If you are giving the portrait to someone else, ask about their preferred photograph and display size. A person who kept an indoor cat may value a quiet home scene more than an adventurous background. Another may want the cat’s face without any scene at all. Do not assume that every recipient wants a name, dates or a quotation. If lettering is added in a separate design, proofread it carefully and leave a margin around it; the portrait creator does not supply a dedication editor.

Compare paper and canvas for your cat portrait

Keep the crop gentle around ears and whiskers

A matte art print works well when you want to choose a frame yourself or keep the picture among smaller photographs. Framed canvas gives the portrait more depth on a wall and includes a floating wooden frame. Both formats use the same selected sizes and vertical artwork proportion. Measure the intended space before deciding, including any mat or outer frame. A larger format needs both viewing space and a suitable print file, so choose for the room rather than for size alone.

Review the front image and edge treatment before approving production. The fine whiskers of a cat and the edge of a pointed ear are easy to lose when a crop is tightened or an image wraps around stretched canvas.
